Welcome to Jacó Beach Costa Rica The town of Jacó Beach is the closest readily accessible beach to San José and still has the reputation of being the "fun and sun" spot on the Pacific coast. Playa Jacó is considered the liveliest and most developed beach town on the Pacific coast. The number one attraction is the surf and surfers love the consistent beach break here and in neighboring Playa Hermosa. The active village is full of life at all hours of the day and night. There are souvenir shops, local clothing and artisan shops, ice-cream stands, close to 100 restaurants and bars, four casinos and several discotheques where you can dance until the wee hours of the night. For families, there is even a miniature-golf course, petting zoo and newly developed playground.
Jacó Beach is located in the Garabito Canton. Because of its closeness to the Central Valley, the 4 km long straight stretch of Jacó Beach is frequented not only by tourist and surfers from all over the world, it is also the most popular beach for the young Costa Rican crowd. The grayish-yellow sand beach has a surf with its strong waves and is perfect for surfers but only recommended for good swimmers since strong currents claim victims almost every year. Jacó is a town that exclusively lives from tourism but has a complete infrastructure with hospital, hardware-stores, supermarkets and endless restaurants, hotels, casinos, discos and cabins, for any budget from. We recommend Jacó plainly for beach-life, sunbathing, beach-games, beach-walks, beach horse-back rides or for young families, on a small to medium budget and to surfers. For all nature tours you have to drive a little. You can enjoy some of the backlands if you take a horseback-ride up to the hills, that offer beautiful views and lots of wildlife. According to the Lonely Planet Guide to Costa Rica: Jacó (pronounced 'ha-ko') plays party central to "capitalinos" itching for a quick hit of sea and surf. Ten years ago, it had it all - warm water, great year-round surf and world-class fishing; now, extra features include rampant prostitution and a drug problem. Still, Jacó continues to pull a crowd. Jacó is blessed with consistent year-round surf breaks. If you're not here simply to surf, you'll naturally want to visit when the weather is at its most congenial. The wet season runs from April to December, with September and October being the rainiest months. Of course, the volume of tourist traffic is determined by the weather - you'll be rewarded with cheaper accommodation and a more authentic Costa Rican vibe should you visit during the rains. During the high season, it's jam-packed with tourists, so reservations are recommended, especially around the winter holidays. |
